GSUK shortlisted for Ethical Corporation Responsible Business Awards
The world is at a tipping point, with danger of irreversible damage to our planet and environment. Society expects that businesses should lead on this subject – and we agree. As a business we recognise the opportunities from sustainable, ethical conduct.
There is no reason why ethical cannot also be desirable. We are technology recovery and re-use experts, breathing new life into unwanted technology products and making them desirable again to new users around the world. We are on a mission to ‘Save Planet Earth’, one mobile device or accessory at a time.
Since our launch in 2005, we have recovered 22.5 million mobile phone accessories – recovering on average around 250,000 units per month, prevented 8,237 tonnes of waste from going to landfill and processed 2.1 million devices – where parts and precious metals contained in smartphones beyond economical repair (BER) are harvested.
We are therefore extremely proud that we have been shortlisted for the Responsible Business Awards in the category of Circular Innovation – which rewards companies that have embraced innovative opportunities to develop sustainable business models for the future.
We believe in the circular economy. Circular models aim to minimise waste and make the most of resources, taking a regenerative approach that contrasts with the traditional ‘take, make, dispose’ model of production. Through recovery, re-use and recycling, we aim to extend the lifespan of technology products, striving for 100% re-use and zero landfill.
GSUK, the Group’s recovery, re-use and recycling arm directly feeds into this circular model. The handsets and other devices we collect are redistributed, allowing users to easily find, purchase and use replacement parts for their phones and accessories. It is a fantastic way to ensure that materials used and discarded become relevant again.
Finger’s crossed now for the Ethical Business Awards gala evening on October 2nd, when the award winners will be announced. Put the date in your diary and stay tuned!
